Once again it's been a great month for golf not only the weather but we have had some success in club matches. We had a tough away draw in the Thorndon Cup and despite a valiant effort the home side proved too strong for us and we lost 11-4. Many thanks to Tiki Hadjioannou for being this year's captain and to all our players who represented our club with great dignity and respect.
Our Norman Plum quarter final match against The Bursted, will be played on Sunday 21st July, these matches consist of 12 players, six playing away and six play at home. The format is match play, 4 ball better ball. If any one wishes to come along to support our teams we would always welcome supporters home or away.
On Thursday 27th June we played the annual Millennium Cup, the event was held at Romford GC, as it was their 125th anniversary. We had a splendid day and a fantastic win beating all three competing teams, Romford, Bentley and Upminster. Next year it will be our turn to host and defend this prestigious event.
Another success came from young Billy Parrish, representing Maylands, who won his second under 6's junior tournament this time at Three Rivers GC, with a score of 37 winning by two clear strokes.
This weekend past we held the Eric Sparrow Trophy, another well supported event in respect of Eric Sparrow a past member who passed away only a few years ago and who was greatly respected by our members. The men's trophy was won by Kevin Ryan and the Ladies event was won by Jenny Roden.
This year's Captains Day landed on the hottest day of the year and congratulations to all who attended and completed the 27 holes. This year we held two team competitions in the morning. These were played with all holes being par three's. Thanks to Darren and the greenkeepers for marking out the tee area for all the holes and producing the score cards. Most people enjoyed the novelty especially the winners. Winning the back nine was a ladies Team consisting of Pat Zuber, Diana Johnson, Helon Hamilton and Anne Mawdsley. In the afternoon we held a 18 hole singles stableford and congratulations go to the winner Ricky Shelvey.
Other recent competition winners :
2nd July Ladies Stableford Sally Hickson
30th June Sunday Stableford John Elsom
25th June Maylands Trophy Brenda Schultz
22nd June Monthly Medal Jason Rackley
We hope you are all enjoying the good weather and your game is improving along with the course, which is looking good and although we don't want the rain it is very much needed.
Our club teams are all performing exceptionally well and we have a Leslie Wood Plate match and a Norman Plum match both against Three Rivers later this month. Our Thornton Cup match against Upminster on Sunday 2nd was fantastic and a great performance and now we are draw away against Benton Hall on 7th July.
More good news was when Billy Parish representing Maylands won his first tournament in an Essex U6s competition at Thorpe Hall, the first of many hopefully.
There are a number of events coming up in the next few weeks, first this Sunday 9th when the course will be closed for our GUEST DAY we have had a good response to date but still time if you wish to bring a guest, you can book a tee time with James in the Pro Shop.
Then on the Thursday 20th we have ASCOT LADIES DAY which starts in the afternoon we have arranged for a "Bookie" and large TV's so as to watch the racing with plenty of food available and evening entertainment. Please see the posters in the Colt bar.
